eBay's Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay's Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay's latest initiative is a little different from its more recent efforts that have focused mostly on re-branding and expanding the reach of PayPal. Sell it Forward encourages users to sell their used clothes and donate half the proceeds to Goodwill. The pilot program is currently only available in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin, though the company is going out of its way to make the process as painless as possible for those in eligible areas. Instead of creating listings for each item, wannabe auctioneers need only fill the pre-paid mailing bag (provided by eBay) with the clothes and accessories they wish to sell. Everything else will be taken care of for them. Employees will decide if your wares are in decent enough condition to sell, create a listing and, if the item is sold within 14 days, split the proceeds between the "seller" and Goodwill. If the item remains unsold for 14 days it becomes a straight donation to the charity. If you're in one of the trial areas and want to give Sell it Forward a go yourself, hit up the source link.

Man and woman discussing bill

Highlights

  • State guaranty funds keep policyholder losses to a minimum when an insurer fails.
  • State receivership (takeover) is the insurance company equivalent of bankruptcy.
  • It's a costly mistake to stop paying premiums to a troubled insurance company.

What if your life insurance company kicks the bucket before you do?

The odds of that occurring are historically very slim, and the chances of a policyholder "losing it all" in such a scenario even slimmer, given the numerous and robust regulatory backstops to insurer insolvency.

"It's very, very rare for a life insurer to become insolvent," says Michael Barry, spokesman for the Insurance Information Institute, an industry trade group. "Life insurers are among the best capitalized insurance companies out there."

Indeed, just 80 multistate life and health insurers and 326 single-state or regional insurers have failed over the past four decades. Life insurers performed particularly well during the recent recession, with just eight insolvencies between 2008 and 2012. Not only did those companies' combined liability of $900 million pale in comparison to the $639 billion Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, but also most policyholders recovered all or nearly all benefits under contract.

That said, understanding the safeguards against life insurer insolvencies and the steps you can take before and after purchase to protect your policy could help you avoid accidentally endangering your investment.

Guaranty: The insolvency 'safety net'

Under the federal bankruptcy code, failing insurance companies cannot declare bankruptcy. Instead, they enter into a three-tiered, highly structured resolution program run by their home state's guaranty association, or GA. This office, which operates within each state's insurance department, serves as an insolvency "safety net" for life, annuity and health insurance consumers. (Separate GAs also protect homeowners insurance and auto insurance customers.)

Because state insurance laws vary and life and health insurers often operate in multiple states, the National Organization of Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Associations, or NOLHGA, was created in 1983 to coordinate insurance failures that cross state lines.

Insurers pay into guaranty funds that protect consumers against insolvency in much the same way the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has your back in a bank failure. Under models established by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, individual life policies are guaranteed to $300,000 (cash values to $100,000) and annuities to $250,000, although state amounts may vary.

And, because life benefits are not payable upon demand in the same way as bank deposits, policyholders need not worry about a run on their troubled insurance company.

"One of the best friends of a resolution plan is using the value of time to achieve an orderly disposition of the assets of the company, as opposed to a fire sale," says Peter Gallanis, president of NOLHGA. "The liabilities come due over a long period of time. Because life insurance companies tend to invest conservatively to honor those liabilities, their holdings tend to be long-term and conservative."

When an insurer runs into financial trouble, it faces three possible levels of receivership by the state.

  • Conservation: Under this least severe option, the state works with the troubled insurer to maintain business as usual, identify problems and explore solutions. If the solutions work, the company may be released. If not, it proceeds to one of the two remaining options.
  • Rehabilitation: Similar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the state takes over control of the company, including its assets, and attempts to steer it back to solvency.
  • Liquidation: Analogous to Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the state either finds a healthy insurer to assume the insolvent company's policies, or failing that, develops a plan to distribute the remaining assets, with guaranty funds if necessary, to honor policyholder claims.

Even in the rare case of liquidation, Gallanis says the financial loss to policyholders is usually minimal. "Going back to the Great Depression, folks have realized in excess of 96 cents on the dollar on their life contract claims and 94 cents on annuity claims," he says.

Keep calm and -- well, you know the rest

Rule No. 1 if your insurer enters receivership is: Don't freak out. Barry says you stand a far greater chance of damaging or even terminating your own policy if you overreact to a notice of receivership and cease to pay your premiums.

"If you stop premium payments, it's very hard because then have to get your agent back involved to reach into the company to get you back on track. And if you have a whole life policy, now you're impacting the cash value," he says.

Barry also cautions against the urge to cash out a whole life policy. "You may get a quick $6,000 to $10,000 by surrendering it, but you may be giving up a $50,000 or $100,000 benefit to your beneficiaries," he says. "Plus, you may not be able to afford or qualify for another policy."

Richard O'Boyle Jr., an independent life insurance agent and senior account associate with New York City-based Schaefer Enterprises Inc., says your agent can be a valuable ally should you need cash from an insurer in receivership.

"An agent can help draft a letter to the company requesting a 'hardship disbursement,'" he says. "A lot of times, the client doesn't even have the policy number anymore or know whether it was policy version A or B. The agent also knows the keywords to drop in there to make sure you'll be heard."

To minimize your exposure to insolvency before you insure, O'Boyle suggests these tips.

  • Know your ratings. Research the financial strength of your short list of prospective insurance companies at A.M. Best, Fitch Ratings, Moody's, and Standard & Poor's. In general, the better the rating, the lower your risk.
  • Insure with an "admitted" company. Companies that are approved, or "admitted," to write life insurance in your state pay into the state guaranty fund; those that aren't, don't. If you insure with a "nonadmitted" insurer and it goes broke, you could lose out completely.
  • Diversify your insurers. "A lot of people place all their eggs in one basket," O'Boyle says. "When you invest too much in one company, it's easy to get too concentrated."

Developing our sense of smell

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

When our noses pick up a scent, whether the aroma of a sweet rose or the sweat of a stranger at the gym, two types of sensory neurons are at work in sensing that odor or pheromone. These sensory neurons are particularly interesting because they are the only neurons in our bodies that regenerate throughout adult life?as some of our olfactory neurons die, they are soon replaced by newborns. Just where those neurons come from in the first place has long perplexed developmental biologists.

Previous hypotheses about the origin of these olfactory nerve cells have given credit to embryonic cells that develop into skin or the central nervous system, where ear and eye sensory neurons, respectively, are thought to originate. But biologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have now found that neural-crest stem cells?multipotent, migratory cells unique to vertebrates that give rise to many structures in the body such as facial bones and smooth muscle?also play a key role in building olfactory sensory neurons in the nose.

"Olfactory neurons have long been thought to be solely derived from a thickened portion of the ectoderm; our results directly refute that concept," says Marianne Bronner, the Albert Billings Ruddock Professor of Biology at Caltech and corresponding author of a paper published in the journal eLIFE on March 19 that outlines the findings.

The two main types of sensory neurons in the olfactory system are ciliated neurons, which detect volatile scents, and microvillous neurons, which usually sense pheromones. Both of these types are found in the tissue lining the inside of the nasal cavity and transmit sensory information to the central nervous system for processing.

In the new study, the researchers showed that during embryonic development, neural-crest stem cells differentiate into the microvillous neurons, which had long been assumed to arise from the same source as the odor-sensing ciliated neurons. Moreover, they demonstrated that different factors are necessary for the development of these two types of neurons. By eliminating a gene called Sox10, they were able to show that formation of microvillous neurons is blocked whereas ciliated neurons are unaffected.

They made this discovery by studying the development of the olfactory system in zebrafish?a useful model organism for developmental biology studies due to the optical clarity of the free-swimming embryo. Understanding the origins of olfactory neurons and the process of neuron formation is important for developing therapeutic applications for conditions like anosmia, or the inability to smell, says Bronner.

"A key question in developmental biology?the extent of neural-crest stem cell contribution to the olfactory system?has been addressed in our paper by multiple lines of experimentation," says Ankur Saxena, a postdoctoral scholar in Bronner's laboratory and lead author of the study. "Olfactory neurons are unique in their renewal capacity across species, so by learning how they form, we may gain insights into how neurons in general can be induced to differentiate or regenerate. That knowledge, in turn, may provide new avenues for pursuing treatment of neurological disorders or injury in humans."

Next, the researchers will examine what other genes, in addition to Sox10, play a role in the process by which neural-crest stem cells differentiate into microvillous neurons. They also plan to look at whether or not neural-crest cells give rise to new microvillous neurons during olfactory regeneration that happens after the embryonic stage of development.

Zendesk update (iPad) (Free)

ZendeskWhat?s it about? Zendesk turns anybody with an iPad into a customer service representative, allowing users to use the cloud to send businesses service requests and problems, and let employees deal with them in an organized way.

What?s cool? Zendesk is neat because it allows you to have a customer service department without actually having a customer service department. The app allows customers to issue you service tickets when they have troubles that go straight into the cloud-based system, and then employees on your team can grab the tickets from the app, deal with them, respond and keep track of it all. The app's latest iPad update adds a new dashboard that makes it easier to interact with, adds a ?leaderboard? to show you how well each member of your team is dealing with support tickets, and shows other metrics that let you see how satisfied your customer service is keeping your customers.

Who?s it for? Businesses that can use a little help keeping customer service organized but cheap should try Zendesk.

What?s it like? Try mWorkFlow for more organization of employees.

Le VampWhat?s it about? Running title Le Vamp requires players to protect a vampire from all kinds of dangers, like sunbeams and other hazards, using touch controls to clear his way.

What?s cool? In most endless running titles, players find themselves controlling a character and doing things like dodging, ducking and jumping. In Le Vamp, you don't control the character, but you do have to protect him. Protagonist Le Vamp runs along a path and requires you to flick pigs into his mouth to keep his strength up, use your finger to block sunbeams, grab things out of his path and more. You'll have to leverage different abilities, as well as different kinds of touch controls, to protect Le Vamp through the course of the game and score points over time as he gets farther and farther.

Who?s it for? Fetch will probably best appeal to kids and parents playing together, but there's a little something for everyone as well.

What?s it like? Titles such as Cut the Rope and Temple Run 2 have similar mechanics to play with.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The Dragon cargo ship has left the International Space Station and is on its way back to Earth.

Astronauts released the unmanned cargo ship from the end of the space station's giant robot arm Tuesday morning.

The parting occurred about 250 miles over the South Pacific. The privately owned spacecraft will splash down in the Pacific early in the afternoon. It's returning science samples and old space station equipment.

The California-based SpaceX company launched the Dragon from Cape Canaveral, Fla., at the beginning of March. NASA is paying SpaceX to periodically supply the space station.

Mechanical trouble caused a one-day delay in Dragon's arrival to the space station.

Three people are aboard the space station right now. They'll be joined by three more following this week's Soyuz launch from Kazakhstan.

Palestinians cool to partial settlement freeze

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? A senior Palestinian official rejected on Sunday the idea of a partial Israeli settlement freeze as a way of restarting peace talks, a sign of tough times ahead for the Obama administration's new attempt to bring the sides together.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met separately late Saturday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to talk about ending a deadlock of more than four years over settlements.

Abbas says he won't return to negotiations without an Israeli construction freeze, saying Israel's building on war-won land pre-empts the outcome of talks on a border between Israel and a future state of Palestine. Abbas last held talks with Netanyahu's predecessor in late 2008.

Netanyahu has refused to halt construction and instead calls for an immediate return to negotiations. President Barack Obama sided with Israel's position during a visit to the region last week, saying the Palestinians should return to talks to sort out the settlement issue.

The U.S. has not spoken publicly about possible compromises in recent days, though there has been some speculation it would propose a partial construction stop in the West Bank heartland, east of Israel's separation barrier.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Sunday that the Palestinians do not seek a confrontation with the Obama administration, but appeared to suggest that nothing short of a full freeze will bring them back to negotiations.

The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967. Since that war, Israel has built dozens of settlements ? considered illegal by much of the world and now home to more than half a million Israelis ? in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Much of the construction takes place in so-called "settlement blocs" close to Israel and in east Jerusalem. Israel's separation barrier cuts off east Jerusalem and some of the settlement blocs from the rest of the West Bank.

Asked if Abbas would accept a partial freeze, east of the barrier, Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio: "Absolutely not. It is rejected."

"First of all, 90 percent of the building in settlements is going on in the blocs," he said. "If we accepted that, we would be committing two crimes. The first is legalizing what is illegal, which is settlement construction, and the second is accepting the Israeli policy (of) dictation."

Israel agreed to a 10-month slowdown in settlement construction early in Obama's first term, allowing talks to resume briefly in 2010. The talks fizzled out after Netanyahu refused to extend the slowdown, which had halted approvals for new homes but allowed previously started construction to continue.

Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who will oversee any negotiations with the Palestinians, said it remained to be seen what would bring about a new round of talks.

"We are after four years of stalemate, of distrust, and we need to see how we restart, what we will discuss," she told Army Radio.

Erekat said the Palestinians would wait for two to three months to see if the Obama administration can come up with a way out of the deadlock. "We want to cooperate with the U.S. administration, not clash with it," he said.

If the deadlock persists, the Palestinians will move ahead with their quest for international recognition, he said. "We have to focus on the steadfastness of our people, and we have 63 international agencies we can join," he said.

In November, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly recognized a state of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, despite objections by the U.S. and Israel. The recognition paved the way for Palestinians to seek membership in U.N. agencies and other international organizations.

Earlier Sunday, Israel dismantled a tent camp Palestinians set up during Obama's recent visit to protest Israeli plans to build a large West Bank settlement near Jerusalem.

During his visit, Obama singled out the settlement, known by its planning name E-1, as particularly problematic. The settlement of more 3,500 apartments would close one of the last open spaces between east Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Before dawn Sunday, about 200 Israeli police officers removed some 40 demonstrators from the tent camp, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. Three protesters were arrested, but no injuries were reported, Rosenfeld said.

The encampment is part of a new Palestinian tactic to protest against Israeli settlement expansion.

How to Go Out and Talk About Your Book | Writing and Publishing ...

It?s common for me to get questions from authors. And it?s interesting to see how the nature of the questions have changed over the years. It used to be that hopeful authors asked, ?How do I find a publisher?? ?Do I need an agent?? ?What publisher/agent would you recommend?? ?How do you write a query letter??

There was a period when I got a lot of questions related to writing a book proposal, identifying genre, copyright and so forth.

Lately, I seem to be getting questions about marketing. ?How do I prepare a marketing plan?? ?What?s the best way to promote a book?? ?How do I promote my ebook?? And today, I got a question from a Toastmaster about how to start going out and speaking about your book.

Of course, I told this author about my latest freebie??50 Ways To Sell Books Through Your Personality.? http://www.patriciafry.com

And I told him about my latest book?Talk Up Your Book, How to Sell Books Through Public Speaking, Interviews, Signings, Festivals, Conferences and More. This book is available at amazon.com and most other online and downtown bookstores. It is in print, on Kindle and audio.

Talk Up Your Book offers up step-by-step assistance for anyone who is eager to start selling books by personally addressing his/her audience as well as those who are terrified of public speaking or anything that resembles it. The book covers stage fright, noodle knees and the whole lack of confidence scenario for reluctant speakers whether you are the author of a nonfiction book, a novel or a children?s book. And it is a no-nonsense guide for those who know that public speaking is an excellent mode of book promotion.

My best advice for a new author who wants to get out in public and promote his or her book, but who isn?t accustomed to it or who is reluctant is this:

1: Begin stepping out into the limelight. Take it slow, if you want. Volunteer to head a committee at work, your club or church so that you get the opportunity to speak before a group. Join a Toastmasters club near you and participate. Join a storytelling or even drama group. Take a speaking course at a local college. Practice, practice, practice.

2: Talk about your book everywhere you go. Come up with a short spiel describing your book and share it often with people you meet at work, socially and in passing. Listen to their questions?these are the things your future audiences will want to know about your book. Make note to weave this information into your speeches when you start writing them.

3: Create a presentation that you would be comfortable presenting to a small group. It should involve an aspect of your book that you know well, are excited about and can convey to others fairly effortlessly. Use some of the notes you?ve collected reflecting some of the questions people have asked about your story, the writing of it or the information in your nonfiction book, for example.

4: Go in search of your ideal audience whether it is children during story time at a local library, civic group members during their monthly lunch meeting, your church auxiliary members, history buffs convening at the museum for docent training, a meeting of businessmen or women or a book club, for example. Contact the program chair and set up a date to speak.

Fill in the blanks?how to write a speech, how to prepare for a presentation, how to create rapport with your audience, radio interviews, getting people to attend your signing, ideas for unusual venues, great introductions to your speeches, how to rehearse your speech, tips for talking about your novel and so much more by reading Talk Up Your Book.

Iowa State Dismantles Notre Dame 76-58 In NCAA Tournament Second Round

Iowa State

Will Clyburn #21 of the Iowa State Cyclones goes up with the ball against Jack Cooley #45 of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first half during the second round of the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at UD Arena on March 22, 2013 in Dayton, Ohio.

DAYTON, Ohio -- Freshman Georges Niang matched a season high with 19 points and Iowa State, showing it can do much more than just fire away from outside the 3-point line, dismantled Notre Dame 76-58 on Friday night in the NCAA tournament.

The 10th-seeded Cyclones (23-11) will play No. 2 seed Ohio State on Sunday. The Buckeyes advanced with a 95-70 thrashing of Iona.

Iowa State led the nation in 3-pointers this season, but the Cyclones were just as effective from short range in ousting the Fighting Irish (25-10), who played their final game as a member of the Big East and will join the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

Melvin Ejim added 17 points for Iowa State, which shot better than 70 percent for much of the second half.

Tom Knight scored 14 to lead the Fighting Irish.

ASUS teases something square and grey, will reveal its new device tomorrow

Were we expecting any new hardware from ASUS? Items we've seen but have not shipped like the Qube and Transformer Book spring to mind immediately, but they're not a direct match for this pic the company posted on its Google+ page earlier this evening. It's inviting any and all guesses as to what's in store and promises a device reveal tomorrow, so your period of eager anticipation will be (thankfully) short lived. Judging by the comments it might not be anything we've gone hands-on with previously, but the image reveals that spun-metal aluminum look we've become familiar with on ASUS' tablets and laptops lately. Beyond that, the oddly squarish aspect ratio draws immediate comparisons to the 3:2 Chromebook Pixel, but until it's officially unveiled we'll leave the rest of the random speculation up to you.

Update: The smart money so far is on its Varidrive media dock, which appears to match the dimensions and spun-metal look nicely -- we'll see what it really is tomorrow.

Stocks rise on Wall Street aided by earnings

Stocks opened higher on Wall Street, bolstered by strong earnings from some major U.S. corporations.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47 points, or 0.3 percent, to 14,469 as of 9:44 a.m. EDT. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced five points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,551. The Nasdaq composite gained 11 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,224.

Nike shares hit an all-time high, rising more than 10 percent in early trading, after it surprised Wall Street late Thursday with a 55 percent spike in net income for the quarter. Tiffany rose $2.57 to $70.46 after its fourth-quarter earnings beat predictions thanks to strong customer demand in Asia for its pricey baubles.

Yet the S&P 500 appears to be headed for its second weekly decline of the year as a deadline looms for the Mediterranean nation of Cyprus to avoid an economic disaster.

Cypriot lawmakers are expected to vote Friday on a raft of new measures they hope will qualify the country for a 10-billion euro lifeline from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. Without a bailout, Cyprus could be forced out of the EU monetary block.

The S&P 500 is down 0.7 percent for the week, paring its gain for the year to 8.7 percent. The Dow is down 0.3 percent on the week, trimming its advance for the year to 10.4 percent.

Stocks have had a strong start to the year with the housing sector in recovery mode and with companies bringing more workers on board. Healthy profits for companies and continuing stimulus from the Federal Reserve have also boosted stock prices.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose from 1.91 percent to 1.93 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves Friday;

? Micron Technology rose 93 cents to $10.01 despite reporting a loss in its fiscal second-quarter later Thursday. The chipmaker said that revenue grew 3 percent, to $2.08 billion, better than analysts had expected.

? Anacor Pharmaceuticals Inc. climbed $1.97 to $6.83 Friday, after the drug developer reported strong data from a mid-stage study of a potential chronic rash treatment.

Read A Rule-Breaking Cover Letter From A Young Eudora Welty

weltyBorn in Jackson, Mississippi in 1909, Eudora Welty was one of the greatest writers the American South produced. In 1933, however, she was just a recent college grad, ?six weeks on the loose in N.Y.,? and she needed a job. In pursuit of that, she wrote one of the most charming cover letters I?ve ever read. That letter to the New Yorker breaks all the rules of cover letters: It?s too long, it meanders far from her accomplishments and qualifications, she makes a cheesy pun, she insults her most recent job, and she speaks openly of needing money. But it?s also beautiful and intriguing, and she promises ?I would work like a slave,? which every employer wants to hear.

An excerpt:

I am 23 years old, six weeks on the loose in N.Y. However, I was a New Yorker for a whole year in 1930-31 while attending advertising classes in Columbia?s School of Business. Actually I am a southerner, from Mississippi, the nation?s most backward state. Ramifications include Walter H. Page, who, unluckily for me, is no longer connected with Doubleday-Page, which is no longer Doubleday-Page, even. I have a B.A. (?29) from the University of Wisconsin, where I majored in English without a care in the world. For the last eighteen months I was languishing in my own office in a radio station in Jackson, Miss., writing continuities, dramas, mule feed advertisements, santa claus talks, and life insurance playlets; now I have given that up.

She didn?t get the job, despite warning in the letter that ?there is no telling where I may apply, if you turn me down.? More?s the pity for the New Yorker, but everything worked out fine for young Ms. Welty in the end. She would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and many, many other awards. Oh, and she also had seven short stories published in the New Yorker.

You can read the full letter at the great Letters of Note.

(AP) ? Wrapping up a three day visit to Israel, President Barack Obama paid respects to its heroes and to victims of the Holocaust, solemnly reaffirming the Jewish state's right to exist.

Accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, Obama laid wreaths at the graves of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism who died in 1904 before realizing his dream of a Jewish homeland, and former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.

He also toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, declaring after that the memorial illustrates the depravity to which man can sink but also serves as a reminder of the "righteous among nations who refused to be bystanders."

Friday's stop at Herzl's grave, together with Thursday's visit to see the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient Hebrew texts, were symbolic stops for Obama that acknowledged that the rationale for Israel's existence rests with its historical ties to the region and with a vision that predated the Holocaust. Obama was criticized in Israel for his 2009 Cairo speech in which he gave only the example of the Holocaust as reason for justifying Israel's existence.

"Here on your ancient land, let it be said for all the world to hear," Obama said at Yad Vashem Friday, in a clear response to that criticism. "The state of Israel does not exist because of the Holocaust, but with the survival of a strong Jewish state of Israel, such a holocaust will never happen again."

Later in the day, Obama was traveling to Jordan where he planned to meet with King Abdullah II. Among the topics is Jordan's struggle with the influx of a half-million refugees from the Syrian civil war. Abdullah has voiced fears that extremists and terrorists could create a regional base in Jordan.

Before leaving for Jordan, Obama was to have lunch with Netanyahu and then tour the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Obama and his hosts arrived at the somber Herzl grave site under cloudless skies. Obama approached Herzl's resting place alone and bowed his head in silence. He turned briefly to ask Netanyahu where to place a small stone in the Jewish custom, then laid the stone atop the grave.

"It is humbling and inspiring to visit and remember the visionary who began the remarkable establishment of the State of Israel," Obama wrote in the Mt. Herzl guestbook. "May our two countries possess the same vision and will to secure peace and prosperity for future generations."

At Rabin's grave a short walk away, Obama was greeted by members of Rabin's family. He initially placed a stone on Rabin's wife's side of the grave, then returned to place one atop Rabin's side. In a gesture linking the U.S. and Israel, the stone placed on Rabin's grave was from the grounds of the Martin Luther King memorial in Washington, the White House said.

Rabin, Obama told family members, was "a great man."

Chatting with the family, Obama joked that "Bibi arranged for perfect weather," using Netanyahu's familiar name. He then added that "Shimon plied me with wine" at the official state dinner Thursday evening. At one point the talk turned to the singer who performed at the dinner, and Obama pointed out that he was known to sing, too. "They had me on YouTube," he said with a laugh. "Check it out -- Obama singing Al Green."

At Yad Vashem, Obama donned a skull cap and was accompanied by Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration camp who lost both parents in the Holocaust. Among his stops was Yad Vashem's Hall of Names, a circular chamber that contains original testimony documenting every Holocaust victim ever identified.

"Nothing could be more powerful," Obama said.

Top Democrat, GOP senator press Obama on Syria

(AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a senior Republican are urging President Barack Obama to use limited military force to end the two-year civil war in Syria.

Michigan's Democratic Sen. Carl Levin and GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona wrote the president Thursday, calling for air strikes against the Syrian regime's aircraft and creation of a safe zone inside Syria's northern border.

The two lawmakers said Patriot missile batteries already deployed to southern Turkey could be positioned to protect the zone, if Turkey agreed.

Levin and McCain also pressed for greater aid to vetted opposition groups, including tactical intelligence, food, medicine, fuel and communications equipment.

Citing conflicting reports about chemical weapons, the two wrote Obama that Syria under President Bashar Assad is disintegrating.

Employment ? If your employment status changes, for example from part-time to full-time, you may be eligible for an insurance change.

Media coverage of poverty: Why so little?

Front page from part three of the eight-day Children in Poverty series from the Springfield News-Leader in Missouri.

By Barbara Raab, Senior Producer, NBC News

"Why is there so little coverage of Americans who are struggling with poverty?"

So begins a thought-provoking essay by Dan Froomkin in Nieman Reports, a respected publication that covers journalism, raising a subject that is getting more ink than usual these days.

In his essay, Froomkin examines what he sees as paltry coverage of America's poor. Citing research from the?Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, Froomkin reports that poverty coverage takes up less than one percent of the news content in the nation's major news outlets. ?

He and others suggest some possible reasons ("neither advertisers nor readers are likely to demand more coverage, so neither will editors," for one) along with a wealth of ideas that could make compelling stories for readers and viewers.

Froomkin's piece begins with an example of what he'd like to see more of: a major series that ran on the front page of the Springfield News-Leader in Missouri's Ozarks for five consecutive days, focusing each day on a specific problem facing children in Missouri's Ozarks region: "No home," "No shoes," "No food," "No car," and "No peace." It's outstanding work, well worth a read.

Froomkin's article led the public editor (a/k/a ombudsman) of The New York Times?to raise questions about her own newspaper's coverage of poverty, and to let readers know she'd be digging further into that question in coming weeks. Among her initial observations: The Times?reporter who has covered poverty policy for decades thinks the paper "has made an extraordinary commitment" to the subject, but some advocates for the poor beg to differ. We'll be watching for more of this discussion in the weeks ahead.

This past Sunday, some of us woke up to?a?lively viewer call-in segment?on C-Span?s Washington Journal?about hunger in America, and about media coverage of it. A lot of callers had strong feelings about the issue, and about what should be done to attack the poverty problems in the country (as did almost all of the hundreds of commenters on our first blog post for the In Plain Sight project here).

Here is more of what the In Plain Sight team has been watching and reading this week:

  • The Philadelphia Inquirer reports?Philly has the highest rate of deep poverty?? that?s income below half the poverty line ??of big cities in America. That's?perhaps not a surprise, because Philadelphia also has the highest poverty rate ? 28.4 percent ? of any of America?s biggest cities.
  • The Washington Post had?a terrific read?on a Rhode Island town that relies on food stamps to survive. Be sure to check out the accompanying?SNAP Map?breaking down food stamp distribution by state.
  • Is hunger in America a ?myth?? A former Montana state legislator?makes the argument?in an op-ed in the Great Falls Tribune.
  • And here?s?one economist?s argument?against raising the minimum wage.

What are you reading and watching on poverty in America? And what are your thoughts about media coverage of poverty??

Y Combinator-Backed Errplane Launches Comprehensive Performance Monitoring And Alert Service For Web Apps

errplane_large-with_nameErrplane, a new Y Combinator-backed service for monitoring performance, uptime and errors for any type of web application, just officially launched its service. Currently, Errplane argues, developers need a number of different services like New Relic, Pingdom and Airbrake to effectively monitor their apps. Errplane unifies all of these functions into one single service, because, as the company’s CEO and co-founder Paul Dix told me last week, all of these separate tools ultimately rotate around the same goal you are trying to accomplish. About a third of the current Y Combinator class is already using the service which Dix co-founded with Todd Persen, as well as a number of other companies, including Garry Tan’s PostHaven for Posterous exiles, VHX, Brewster, Amicus and RingRevenue. Across all of these beta customers, the system currently handles about 30 million data points per day. Errplane provides developers with an easy to use API that ensure that an apps’ vital signs constantly flow into Errplane’s database, including request response time, exceptions and other performance stats. With a bit of extra code, developers and also enable heartbeat tracking (to ensure background processes haven’t failed), information about background job completion time and more detailed information about user behavior. The service, of course, also provides numerous options for getting alerts when something fails, including the ability to get SMS alerts, emails and chatroom messages in Hipchat, Campfire and similar tools. To get started, developers only have to insert a few lines of code and the system should be ready to go. Currently, Errplane offers libraries for Ruby on Rails, Python and Node.js, but the company plans to add support for JavaScript, Java, PHP and .NET very soon. While the team is currently focusing on web platforms, Dix told me that it’s also considering to branch out into mobile and an iOS version will likely launch once the team has the major web platforms covered. One nice feature of Errplane, as Dix told me, is that the service provides a default dashboard, but because it offers a comprehensive API, developers can also integrate it with their existing dashboards or build their own dashboards from scratch. The API exposes all of the data the service collects and while some of its competitors often just provide developers with 1-minute averages, Errplane gives you full access to all of your stats. Indeed, one of the things the team learned from its beta

Defiant teen gets life sentences in Ohio shooting

T.J. Lane unbuttons his shirt during sentencing Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Chardon, Ohio. Lane, was given three lifetime prison sentences without the possibility of parole Tuesday for opening fire last year in a high school cafeteria in a rampage that left three students dead and three others wounded. Lane, 18, had pleaded guilty last month to shooting at students in February 2012 at Chardon High School, east of Cleveland. Investigators have said he admitted to the shooting but said he didn't know why he did it. (AP) ? Wearing a T-shirt with "killer" scrawled across it, a teenager cursed and gestured obscenely as he was given three life sentences Tuesday for shooting to death three students in an Ohio high school cafeteria.

T.J. Lane, 18, had pleaded guilty last month to shooting at students in February 2012 at Chardon High School, east of Cleveland. Investigators have said he admitted to the shooting but said he didn't know why he did it.

Before the case went to adult court last year, a juvenile court judge ruled that Lane was mentally competent to stand trial despite evidence he suffers from hallucinations, psychosis and fantasies.

Lane was defiant during the sentencing, smiling and smirking throughout, including while four relatives of victims spoke.

After he came in, he calmly unbuttoned his blue dress shirt to reveal the T-shirt reading "killer," which the prosecutor noted was similar to one he wore during the shooting.

At one point, he swiveled around in his chair toward the gallery where his own family members and those of the slain teenagers were sitting and spoke suddenly, surprising even his lawyer.

"The hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to the memory," he said, then cursed at and raised his middle finger toward the victims' relatives.

A student who was wounded in the rampage dismissed the outburst.

"He said it like a scared little boy and couldn't talk slow enough that anyone could understand him," said Nate Mueller, who was nicked in the ear in the shooting.

Dina Parmertor, mother of victim Daniel, called Lane "a pathetic excuse for a human being" and wished upon him "an extremely, slow torturous death." She said she has nightmares and her family has been physically sick over the crimes.

"From now on, he will only be a killer," she said, as Lane's smile widened. "I want him to feel my anger toward him."

Prosecutors say Lane took a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to the school and fired 10 shots at a group of students in the cafeteria. Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin, both 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, were killed.

Lane was at Chardon waiting for a bus to the alternative school he attended, for students who haven't done well in traditional settings.

Six days before the rampage, Lane had sent a text message to his sister, who attended Chardon High school, and mentioned a school shooting, Geauga County Prosecutor James Flaiz disclosed after the sentencing. He gave no details about what the message said.

"The way the text message was phrased to his sister, I'm not sure she would have taken it as anything. I think only when you look at it in retrospect does it really have the impact that it does now," Flaiz said.

Lane's sister, Sadie, was in the cafeteria the day of the shooting, and said outside the snow-swept courthouse that the brother she saw in court wasn't the one she remembers. She asked for prayers for her family.

"It may be hard for some to understand, but I love my brother and hope that whatever the sentencing in life takes him in the future, that he can touch others' lives in a positive way from the point of view that only he can give," she said.

She spoke and left the courthouse before Flaiz addressed reporters.

Flaiz said he has a theory about the motive but wouldn't discuss it until he has a chance to meet with the families of victims and answer their questions.

Lane's courtroom behavior came as a surprise, he added.

" I am totally disgusted by that," Flaiz said. "What he did today is consistent with what we thought of him all along."

One of Lane's defense attorneys, Ian Friedman, also said he was caught off-guard by the comments. The defense had signaled earlier that Lane wouldn't speak in court and didn't want anyone to speak for him.

Lane had pleaded guilty last month to three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.

Life imprisonment without parole was the maximum sentence Lane faced. He wasn't eligible for the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the shootings. Relatives of the slain students indicated earlier they wanted Lane to get the maximum sentence.

In addition to three life sentences without chance of parole, Geauga County Common Pleas Judge David Fuhry also gave Lane sentences totaling 37 additional years for attempted murder and felonious assault and using a weapon in the crimes.
